Traditional leather care products, like saddle soap, often condition and soften leather but fail to clean thoroughly. They may contain animal-based ingredients that can promote microbial growth, leading to leather degradation.

Additionally, standard household cleaners can leave hydrophilic (water-attracting) residues that mask the DWR coating. This can cause leather to absorb water and "wet out" during damp or wet conditions.
