How to Choose the Right Riding Boots
There are plenty of things to think about when choosing which riding boots to buy. In this guide we’ll cover off the key things you should consider, including sizing, material, types of riding, brands and more.
What are riding boots?
It may seem like a simple question, but lets just take the time to understand what riding boots are and why they are important.
Whilst a nice pair of riding boots can complete your riding look, their main purposes are for your safety and comfort:
- The defined heel on a riding boot ensures your foot grips firmly to the stirrups, preventing the boot from slipping through the stirrup and giving you good control over the horse.
- Prevents the saddle from rubbing against the riders leg.
- A sturdy toe protects the feet whilst on the ground.
- Protects your feet and lower legs from impact injuries whilst riding.
- Provides good ankle support and helps absorb shock whilst riding.
1. How to choose the right size and fit
Riding boots typically follow standard shoe sizes when it comes to the foot, but unlike normal shoes you also need to select a calf width and calf height. For example, the Ariat Palisade Tall Boots have a choice of calf widths (Full, Regular, Slim, Wide) and calf heights (Short, Medium, Tall).
How to measure yourself for riding boots

Sit in a straight chair with your knees bent at 90 degrees to the floor. Wear the breeches and socks that you would most likely wear with your tall boots. Have someone else measure your calves, if possible:
- A. Measure your foot size.
- B. Measure the calf width at the widest part of the calf whilst wearing riding socks.
- C. Measure leg height from the floor to the bend behind the knee.
Pro Tip: If your boots feel slightly too tall when new, they will drop around 1-2cm as the leather softens.
2. Short vs. Long Riding Boots: Are Short or Long Riding Boots Better?
The choice between short and long riding boots really comes down to the types of riding you do and your personal preference. Here we’ll outline the key differences to help you decide what the right style is for you.
Short riding boots
Short riding boots are popular among younger riders and for casual riding in non-formal settings. These boots are versatile and designed to be comfortable for everyday use.
The boots offer the benefits of a defined heel for the safety of gripping the stirrups, as well as offering ankle and foot protection.
Paddock boots and jodhpur boots are some of the more popular short riding boot styles.
Long/tall riding boots
Long riding boots offer more support and protection to the rider, whilst helping to prevent chafing and pinching from the saddle and stirrups.
Traditionally long riding boots are more formal, making them ideal for competitions and formal riding. However, the limited movement offered with long boots means they’re not always ideal for duties around the yard.
Field boots, dress boots and yard boots are some of the more popular long riding boot styles.
3. Material: Leather vs. Synthetic
There are two main types of material to choose from:
- Leather Boots – Traditional, durable, and breathable. Leather boots conform to your foot over time, offering a superior and comfortable fit as well as a classic appearance. Leather boots when looked after can have a long lifespan.
- Synthetic Boots – Generally priced lower than leather, synthetic boots offer good value for money. They require less maintenance than leather boots and are waterproof making them great for wet weather riding.

Questions we’re often asked about riding boots
Should You Size Up in Riding Boots?
Riding boots should fit snugly but not be uncomfortably tight. Leather boots will naturally stretch and mould to your feet over time, so it’s generally best to buy a pair that fits well rather than sizing up. However, if you plan to wear thick socks or have wider feet, going up half a size may be beneficial. Always try boots on with the socks you intend to wear while riding to ensure the best fit.
Is It Better for Boots to Be Tighter or Looser?
Boots that are too loose can cause rubbing and blisters, while overly tight boots may restrict movement and become uncomfortable. Ideally, they should be snug around the foot and calf but allow for natural movement without pinching. A slight heel lift when walking is normal, as the boots will soften with wear.
